Our day of memories and sharing had a rather delayed start. We ventured out with train plans intact. Except a 1 hour journey turned into an epic 2 1/2 hours of getting on and off trains due to all kinds of events: blocked lines, a person under a train, delayed timetables, etc. Eventually we arrived in Croxley Green where it was drizzling a light rain. This turned into a full on downpour as we walked around the village of our birth. Nonetheless we visited the house we lived in before we left for NZ, relatives' houses, the rec we used to play in (someone had finally removed the big metal slide and replaced it with an adventure playground).
We had lunch at the pub our Nan used to drink in and toasted her with a pint of Guiness, cod, mushy peas and chips.
Our last stop was the school we all started our education in. It was still there, built in 1886 and now converted into housing. The memories flooded back.
The school is actually really beautiful - great windows! It's funny, you always described it as a village and going to London once a year. After living here, doesn't it all seem ridiculously close? :-)
ReplyDeleteWe were saying exactly that, Jane. It was a massive adventure going to London when I was young. We recognised heaps of the places the trains went through and on the road signs and can't believe we didn't go there. It is vastly different than the way we live xx
