Regensburg

This was my favourite Christmas market town last time we came – as it was just as lovely. The architecture is amazing, the houses facing the street were built in the 1200-1400 period and surround courtyards.

Restoration has been fantastic and Regensburg is now a UNESCO city. There were many towers as we saw in Passau, although many are empty as the regulations are very strict – with no lifts or escalators allowed it makes it difficult to get up them.

Roman wall foundations

It was really interesting to see the original Roman city wall is the foundations of some buildings still in use today. Apparently people avoid extending buildings underground as the archaeologists move in due to the historical remains under the whole town.

There are several Christmas markets throughout the town, some focus on the local artists. It is wonderful to see the locals enjoying lunch at the markets and children buying nativity figures.





 There is a newer Christmas market at he chateau of a local wealthy woman – it is huge.

The 800 year old sausage shop is still in operation but they have replaced the windows. The sausages and sauerkraut were just as tasty. We had a voucher for 6 sausages, bread, sauerkraut and a beer.

The ancient bridge is under repair as they used salt to clear the ice in winter and it has turned the stones crumbly. We could see any of it other than the arches entering the river. We all did a bit of shopping here so the suitcases are getting a tad full (especially for me and Jane).

Our farewell dinner included lobster and bombe Alaska so it is probably a good thing that the cruise is coming to and end! Ellen and I creamed Alan and Jane in euchre – clever us.

Tomorrow is our final full day on the ship which should be really interesting as we are going down the mountain via locks
